Rituals of Life Exhibition: Vatican Museum

Today we all got up early to catch the Metro back to St Peters square to visit the Vatican Museum and see for ourselves the Aboriginal exhibition as not all of us could go to the opening last Friday night.

We lined up, only short at this time, we all had fun buying scarfs while we waited, spirits again high as we are going to see our cultural expressions of spirit in the Rituals of Life exhibition at the Vatican Museum.

North Sydney - old/new; different/same

I am enjoying taking the time out to reflect on the words of Mary MacKillop before embarking on a journey of a life time. What stays in my mind this morning is how Mary describes North Sydney:

The place is beautifully retired; though near one of the chief streets, it is as quiet as if miles away from other people. We have no noise, bustle or excitement, have a nice little garden and paddock with high fences, and little birds singing around us, their singing and the ticking of the clocks being the only sounds except at recreation, and, of course, necessary talking during exercise and study (McCreanor; 2006:46).

On the one hand this is a very different scene to the business of North Sydney today, but on the other not so much. As when you have the opportunity to visit MacKillop Place you will be amazed at how its sense of tranquillity and peace is still remains.

A time for reflection

7th October.

It's an overcast windy morning here in Sydney.

A good time to reflect on Mary Mackillop's own words.

Decided to start to reading Mary Mackillop in Challenging Times 1883 - 1899. This is a fantastic collection of letters arranged and edited by Sheila McCreanor RSJ. They provide an insight into the depths of Mother Mary's character and unwaving faith in challenging times.

One week till I leave.
